The Three-Step Approval Process
Connecting a solar PV system to the Australian grid is not just an installation task — it requires formal approval from the Distribution Network Service Provider (DNSP). The process varies slightly by state but follows a common structure.

DNSP Application Requirements
The DNSP application (typically submitted via an online portal) requires:
Customer and property details (NMI — National Meter Identifier)
Installer CEC accreditation number
Inverter make, model, and CEC approval number
Panel make, model, and number of panels
System size (kW AC and kWp DC)
Single-line diagram (for systems above 30 kW — always a good idea for any system)
Export limit configuration (if applying for zero-export or limited export)
Common Causes of Application Rejection
Inverter not on the CEC Approved Products list
System exceeds the DNSP's maximum export limit for the feeder (requires a technical assessment)
Three-phase application for a single-phase supply property (requires separate supply upgrade)
Application submitted by an unaccredited person
STC Rebate — the Financial Connection
The federal Small-scale Technology Certificate (STC) rebate is calculated based on the system's expected generation over its deeming period. To be eligible:
