PPE Is the Last Layer of Protection

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is the final barrier between a hazard and the worker. In solar installation, PPE must address three distinct hazard categories: electrical hazards (from energised DC systems), fall hazards (from rooftop work), and environmental hazards (UV radiation, heat, and physical impact).

Electrical PPE — What Installers Frequently Get Wrong

  • Standard leather work gloves provide no electrical protection — they must be electrical-insulating rubber gloves rated to the DC voltage being worked on

  • Safety boots must have non-conductive soles — look for the symbol "Ω" (Omega) on the boot indicating electrical resistance protection

  • Working on a live DC circuit (e.g., replacing a connector without de-energising) requires a Permit to Work and documented risk assessment — it is not routine work
