Net metering is the legal right of Philippine solar owners to sell excess electricity back to their distribution utility (Meralco, VECO, etc.) at the prevailing generation rate. It is governed by Republic Act 9513 (Renewable Energy Act) and DOE Circular DC2013-05-0009. Here is the exact process.

Who Qualifies

  • Residential or commercial customers with a grid-tied solar system

  • Maximum system capacity: 100 kW for residential (Meralco service territory)

  • Must have an existing grid connection with a distribution utility

  • System must be installed by a DOE-accredited contractor

What You Earn

Meralco credits excess generation at the blended generation charge — approximately ₱5.00-6.50/kWh (varies quarterly). This credit offsets your monthly bill. Unused credits roll over monthly but are forfeited annually (bank resets every March billing cycle).

Important Documents Required

  • Accomplished Application Form for Net Metering

  • Copy of Electrical Permit from LGU

  • Copy of Building Permit (if new construction)

  • System technical specifications (inverter datasheet, panel datasheet)

  • Latest Meralco bill (proof of account)
