Anti-Islanding Protection — Why Your Grid-Tied Inverter Shuts Off During Outages
One of the most common complaints from new solar owners: "My solar system stopped working during the brownout — but the sun was shining!" This is not a malfunction. It is a critical safety feature called anti-islanding protection, required by Philippine law.
What Is Islanding?
Islanding occurs when a solar inverter continues to generate electricity and feeds it into the grid even after the grid has gone down. This creates a "live island" of energized wires in what utility workers assume is a de-energized line.
Result: A utility lineman working to restore power touches what he believes is a dead wire — and is electrocuted by your solar system.
The Legal Requirement
DOE Circular MC 2013-05-0009 requires all grid-tied solar systems in the Philippines to have anti-islanding protection compliant with IEEE 1547. When the grid goes down, the inverter must disconnect within 2 seconds.
How Anti-Islanding Works

Solutions for Backup Power During Outages

Hybrid inverter with battery: The inverter disconnects from the grid but continues powering your home from battery and solar in "island mode" — an intentional, controlled island separate from the utility grid
Generator + auto-transfer switch: Conventional backup power
Off-grid system: No grid connection at all — operates independently at all times
A grid-tied system WITHOUT battery will always shut down during outages. This is by design. To keep power during brownouts, you need a battery.
